SENSORY AWARENESS /
RELAXATION ACTIVITIES
CONCEPTS
Learning takes place in
positive environments.
Everyone needs support from other people.
PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES
Studnets will develop a
greater respect for their own sensory powers and acquire an increased
awareness of commonsensory pleasures shared by others.
MATERIALS.
None.
TIME
5 - 7 minutes.
INSTRUCTIONS
The first activity is a good
exercise at the beginning of class when all the students' energies seem to
be scattered. It is also useful as a way to relax students before they
take a test or after lunch. Some teachers have used relaxation techniques
as a lead-in to "prewriting". The third exercise is included
only from teachers who are completely comfortable with how their class
would respond.
LESSON CAPSULE
(1) |
Inhale
through your nose for the count of eight. As you breathe in, let
your stomach come out. Then exhale through your mouth for the
count of eight, letting your stomach come in. Repeat this fifteen
times. This is a good exercise at the beginning of a class when
all the students' energies seem to be scattered. We have also
found it useful as a way to relax students before they take a
test.

(2) |
The
entire class starts to walk around. Shake both hands of each
person you meet. Then shake the elbows of each person you meet.
Now shake each other's shoulders. Afterward, stop, close your
eyes, and become aware of how you feel.
|
(3) |
Everyone
stand or sit in a circle, all facing one direction so that you are
each directly behind another person. reach out to the person in
front of you and massage his neck and shoulders (3 minutes). Now
turn around and do the same thing to the person who is behind you
(3 minutes). This way, everyone is both simultaneously giving and
receiving a message. |
